The word "socialism" has been weaponized to make you afraid of your own fire department.
East Germany was a centrally planned, one-party state-socialist system. The United States is primarily a capitalist economy with private ownership, competitive markets, and a set of public programs funded by taxation. Calling Social Security "socialism" is like calling your car insurance "communism." The word is being used as a weapon — not as a definition.
When a billionaire's lobbyist calls Medicare "socialism," he is not making a political science argument. He is protecting a tax structure that allows his client to pay a lower effective tax rate than the nurse who works in that Medicare ward.
Under President Dwight D. Eisenhower — a Republican, a five-star general, the Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in World War II — the top marginal income tax rate on the wealthiest Americans was 91 percent. This was not called socialism. It was called the American economy. It produced the largest middle class in human history.
The systematic campaign to label every public program "socialist" began in earnest after the New Deal proved that regulated capitalism worked for ordinary people. That success was, from the perspective of concentrated wealth, the problem.
When someone calls your fire department "socialism," ask them what they would prefer — and who profits from the alternative.

During the 91% top marginal rate under Eisenhower, no one called it socialism. The United States built the interstate highway system, funded the GI Bill, and created the largest middle class in world history. The rate applied only to income above a very high threshold — the wealthy still got wealthy. They just couldn't hollow out the country doing it.
