This isn't primarily a story about Tim Walz. It's a story about how narratives get constructed when the public doesn't verify claims — even when the information is sitting in searchable public records.
Everything I'm about to share took me about 10 minutes to find. Court records. Official judge statements. Department of Education timelines. News archives from 2020-2022.
The question isn't whether this information exists. It does.
The Narrative You Were Told
"Tim Walz allowed fraud to happen and did nothing to stop it."
This claim has been repeated across cable news, in congressional hearings, on social media, and in political speeches. It became the foundation for freezing child care funding to 19,000 Minnesota children.
But is it accurate?
What 10 Minutes of Research Reveals
The Actual Timeline (All Publicly Documented)
State officials identify fraud EARLY
MN Dept. of Education flags "implausible" claims, documents "concerning behavior" and begins investigating.
This is months BEFORE the pandemic.
The state TRIES to stop payments
MDE denies applications, labels the organization "severely deficient," attempts to terminate the partnership.
This is the state trying to STOP the fraud.
Feeding Our Future SUES the state
Claims racial discrimination to block investigation. The lawsuit was led by Aimee Bock — who is white, not Somali.
This created legal obstacles blocking enforcement.
FBI tells state: Don't interfere
Continuing the public legal battle would tip off the fraudsters and potentially blow the federal probe.
The state stepped back because the FBI told them to.
FBI raids. Federal indictments begin.
Over 70 people eventually charged, 50+ convicted.
The system worked. The criminals were caught.
The Judge's Public Rebuke
Politicians and media repeatedly claimed that Judge John Guthmann "ordered" the state to resume payments to Feeding Our Future.
In September 2022, Judge Guthmann took the rare step of issuing a public statement:
"Judge Guthmann never ordered the Department of Education to resume payments to FOF in April 2021, or at any other time. The Department of Education voluntarily resumed payments."
The Viral Video
In December 2025, a conservative YouTuber posted a 43-minute video claiming to expose fraud at Somali-run day care centers. The video went viral after being amplified by JD Vance and Elon Musk.
State investigators visited every day care featured in the video.
The result? "All were operating as expected."
Yet based largely on this video, the Trump administration froze child care funding for the entire state of Minnesota.
What This Teaches Us
This case is a perfect illustration of how media manipulation works:
- Start with a kernel of truth: Yes, fraud happened. Over $250 million was stolen. Criminals exploited pandemic-era programs.
- Omit the context that complicates the narrative: Don't mention the state identified fraud early. Don't mention they tried to stop it. Don't mention the lawsuit that blocked them. Don't mention the FBI asked them to stand down.
- Repeat a false claim until it becomes "true": The judge "ordered" payments to continue. Say it enough times, and people believe it — even though the judge publicly denied it.
- Count on people not verifying: The information is public. Court records. Judge statements. Department timelines. But most people won't look.
- Punish before people can check: Freeze funding. Launch investigations. Call for resignations. Move fast enough that the damage is done before anyone can say, "Wait, is this accurate?"
The Questions You Should Always Ask
- Who gains power? Politicians targeting opponents and immigrant communities
- Who gains money? The fraudsters are in prison. Who benefits from the political narrative now?
- What protections are weakened? Child care funding frozen. Immigrant communities targeted. State oversight capacity undermined.
- How would this be used by someone with worse intentions? As precedent to freeze funding to any state, target any community, punish any political opponent.
Your Assignment
Don't take my word for any of this. Verify it yourself:
- Search "Judge Guthmann Feeding Our Future statement" — find his actual words
- Search "Minnesota Department of Education Feeding Our Future 2020" — find the timeline
- Search "Aimee Bock convicted" — find who actually led the fraud
- Search "Minnesota day care video investigation results" — find what investigators actually found
The information exists. The only question is whether you'll look for it.
